News: Learning and teaching mobility in Daugavpils

The joint Learning and teaching mobility in Daugavpils took place from 19 till 24 of April, 2015. 19 students and 14 teachers from Spain, Italy, Poland and Croatia were hosted by Latvian students and teachers.

After welcome session and school introduction we started with CLIL lessons for students and teachers. There were Latvian history and culture lessons offered for students. They worked in 4 groups and found out common “ footmarks” in Spanish, Italian, Polish, Croatian and Latvian history and culture and defined the most important brands of their own culture. At the end they compared the school systems to different criteria in Latvia, Spain, Poland, Italy and Croatia and made presentations. All students had the Math and Science lesson in English language. They solved tasks connected with history and culture of Daugavpils in Math and studied nutrition processes in nature in the Science lesson. There was an activity offered by Latvian students called “ π day”. The students made presentations about their experience in Daugavpils using the tool infogr.am.

The teachers took part in the Math and Science lessons hold in English language to see the practical side of CLIL methodology. The most important part of this session was the presentation of lesson plans done by all project partners and discussion about the schedule. Thanks to active engagement of all there was the final framework for lesson plans done.

Methodologists of CLIL and bilingual education in Daugavpils explained the basics of CLIL methodology used in schools in Daugavpils and characterized the situation concerning CLIL in Latvia and Daugavpils. All guests presented the CLIL system in their countries and took part in discussion about the differences, benefits and challenges in project schools. There were the results of questionnaires sent to the ministries and schools in project countries presented.

In the afternoons the students and teachers visited the Clay Art centre and had a workshop, the Art Centre of Mark Rothko, they joined the national dancing and singing, the competition about the modern music and bowling game. All participants had a workshop in Bread museum with making bread and dancing at the end and visited in the most important centre for Catholics – Aglonas Bazilika, the Synagogue and the Science centre in regional university.
